The first week at Heber Valley Camp is the missionary training camp. Monday morning we met with all of the missionaries at a stake center in Heber. There are 76 missionary couples on the mountain this year. It was an amazing sight to walk into the chapel and see it filled with the wonderful people we will be working with this year.
The first thing we did was sing the song "We'll Bring The World His Truth" with some variations and an extra verse thrown in just for us:
We've now been called, we're willing to serve.
bear testimony...obey His word.
We will do all our leaders request,
And work and serve to do our best
Working each day in this mountain place,
We'll feel His love and saving grace.
Together we'll grow in friendship and love,
acknowledge our blessings from heav'n above.
We are as the army of Helaman,
we have been taught through the years.
And we are now the Lord's missionaries
to be the camp volunteers.
This song set the stage and the spirit for the training to come.
Monday we did round robin training getting to know about the various teams and what they do. We also had sessions about camp policies and how thing work in this mission.
That night we met back on the mountain for a Family Home Evening dinner and short program.
Tuesday we dressed in our Sunday best and had a spiritual training day.
The camp is set up with a managing director (Brother Hatch), his assistants and clerks. Brother Hatch is the authority over our "group" (we are not considered a ward or branch) and presides over our Sunday meetings, etc.
There is also a Young Women's Camp Committee from the Heber City area who work with the managing director and the Young Women groups who come to the camp to make sure that everything runs smoothly.
We listened to several amazing speakers today including Brother Hatch, his assistants, Brother Winegar and Brother Whimpey, President Wilcox- Heber North Stake President, Sister Greenhalgh and Sister Johansen of the YW Committee and Elder Steven K. Randall, the Area Seventy over the camp. Every talk was uplifting and added to the spirit of the day. It was impressed upon us what an amazing place Heber Valley Camp is. It is land dedicated to the Lord to provide a place of refuge from the world. A place where Young Women and others can come to feel the love of their Heavenly Father and build testimonies.
Besides being spiritually fed, the managing director's wives fed us lunch and a very nice dinner. It was an amazing day.
Wednesday We continued our round robin training.
Thursday Round robin training continued and included first aid training by local medical professionals. On Friday we were supposed to wrap up training and get our team assignment, but because of forecast bad weather, they shortened the training and announced our teams on Thursday.
After going around to all of the different groups, we were kind of sad that we couldn't be on every team. They all sounded like something we would enjoy.
We all gathered in the chapel and they read off the lists of teams.
We are assigned to the Legacy Lake Team! We are excited because this had always been the direction we were drawn in. There are nine couples on our team. The Elder and Sister Jensen are the team leaders.
Friday they moved trailers up to the mountain. Most of the missionaries bring their own trailers to live in. There are two missionary campgrounds. Each of the 8 camps also have camp host trailers parked in the camp. The moving process started Thursday and continued through Saturday. Friday morning we helped for awhile building sewer lines that would connect to the trailers. Mostly we didn't know how to help so we worked in our own snug little cabin. Only 7 couples are in cabins. We feel very fortunate to have one.
Saturday We were able to take a ride around the camp on our Rhino. The camp is beautiful, although at this point, a little confusing trying to figure out where everything is.
Sunday we had our first meetings as a group at a chapel in Heber. We will meet in Heber until the weather is warmer, then we will hold our meetings in the Hinckley pavillion on the mountain. We are set up like a ward with a RS President and High Priest Group leadership. The most notable absence is children. Sacrament meeting was VERY quiet!
We had a camp potluck in the afternoon. I think any hope of losing weight up here is pointless. The food was all very yummy.
We ended the evening playing games with some of the missionaries. The game is "Marbles". It is similar to "Sorry", but played in teams- Elders vs. Sisters. It gets pretty competitive!
We are meeting so many wonderful people up here. The challenge is to learn all of the names and faces. It does help that they all have the same first name- "Elder" and "Sister"!
We are feeling very blessed to be able to serve on this beautiful mountain!
