Cabin Staining

As the summer winds down and the campers only come on weekends, it is time to do fall projects.  Every year one forth of the cabins need to be restained.  Guess who gets to do that?!?
All told, the missionaries will save about $40,000-$50,000 in labor costs, and the camp will continue to look great!

I am on the "Masking and Taping " crew.  We cover every window, door, sign, etc. This is Sister Brown, and E/S Pulley
After the cabins have been power washed, buffed and borated, the "sprayers" move in
After the cabins are sprayed, the "brushers" go to work making sure that there are no air bubbles in the stain.

Granger is the "mixer".  His job is to mix the stain and monitor the lines to the sprayers

Fall Has Arrived!

Our days have been beautiful, the nights are chilly, and every time we drive up the parkway, more leaves are changing.  It's a sure sign that our time on the mountain, for this year, is ticking away.
We have missed having the Young Women on the mountain.  The families and groups are fun, but the spirit is not quite the same.  The families do have a lot of fun though.
Family bonding time on the lake

The sandbox is a big hit with campers young and old

We had a couple of fun visitors:  Granger's brother, Dick, came to see us, and my niece, Megan was here last week with an EFY staff group.

For now we will only have groups, on the lake, on the weekends.  That will last until the lake is closed for the winter.  Then we will clean boats, lifejackets, etc.

The Young Women have left the Mountain

It's hard to believe that 11 weeks have passed so quickly.  The last week has been very memorable.  Monday night Gary Bromley, Granger's friend from Distribution, knocked on our door!  He was here with his ward as a  Priesthood leader.  We had a great visit.  His ward joined us on the lake Tuesday morning.  He and Granger had a great time on the lake- except for the wind!

Another fun group we had on the lake was the Salt Lake Tongan Stake.  These beautiful girls serenaded us with amazing songs, including, Love At Home and We Thank Thee O God For a Prophet- sung in Tongan.  They had all of the missionaries in tears.
What they couldn't do, was canoe :-)  The winds were very strong- almost to the point of not being able to put them out.  The girls were clueless when it came to paddling a canoe!
I came up the dock and talked to one of the leaders.  I told her the girls needed to channel their ancestors!  She in turn laughed and said, "I know, you would never think we came from the islands!!!"
The missionaries had to rescue several of the boats and tow them to shore.  Granger jumped in a canoe to try and help, but it never got off the shore before the wind overturned it and he ended up in the water.  He then went over to the dam to coach the girls off the rocks.  He slipped on the rocks several times and almost turned over one of the canoes when he fell over into the front of it!  Needless to say, he was quite wet- even his waterproof boots, inside and out!

After our session, we headed over to Camp Rebekah.  Gwyn, our son-in-law's Mom, and my fellow Grandma, was up for the day with her ward.  We had a fun, quick visit with her.

Wednesday was our p-day.  We headed home and met up with some of our grandkids at the Davis Co Fair.  It was lots of fun, but very HOT!!! We were glad to escape back up to the mountain.   When we got here, we found out we had missed a downpour and thunder storm.  The next morning we began the day by hauling out the life vests that had been put in the showers the night before to dry out.
Thursday was a beautiful day!  We had great sessions of girls, and a surprise visit from the Young Women Committee. It was fun to have them on the lake!

Sister Johansen and Sister Hyde

Our final session of the day was a stake from Layton.  They finished in great style with every life jacket soaking wet- but no canoe tipovers!!!

We estimate that we have seen about 27,000 young women at the lake this summer!
It has been an amazing experience, one we will never forget.

Last Week of Young Women

It's hard to believe that this is the last week we will have the Young Women groups in camp!  Ten weeks have gone by very quickly.
Last week started very strangely.  Sunday night it started to rain and Monday morning it continued to down pour.  This was the first week that we had no girls scheduled on the lake on Monday!  Had they been scheduled, we would have put them on the lake and we would have all been drenched and cold.  We were grateful to be in our nice dry, warm cabin.

We have very changeable weather here on the mountain.  It can be beautiful one minute and then crazy wind and / or rain the next.  Friday night we had a group of families that we couldn't put on the lake because the wind was so strong we actually had whitecaps on the lake.  Saturday morning we started early and held a special 8:30 session for them so they could come back.  The water was like glass.  They all had a great time.
The best part of the weather, is the amazing views we get.  Sun, rain, snow, fog, the mountain is beautiful!!!

Sunset after the rain

We had a surprise visitor this week at our cabin.
Apparently he was hanging out in our tent.  When Granger opened it up to get out the Rhino, he headed to the side of our cabin.  So glad I wasn't outside!  Granger escorted him to a  grassy area and we haven't seen him since.  This is good, because the neighboring cabin has two snakes that live underneath!

We have had some fun with family!  Layne and Donna came up on Sunday and attended church with us.  We had dinner after and played some games.  It was fun to spend some time with them.  Their daughter, Megan, will be here next week with a group of EFY staff.  It will be fun to see her.
